This Weekend in Nerdlesque: April 5th, 2013

Ruby Solitaire impressed many at the Great Burlesque Exposition last weekend with her Dr. Who inspired classic burlesque routine as a Dalek. The Shanghai Pearl tweeted “A stunning #Dalek strip just happened!!” and followed with how she had to double-check it was indeed a Dalek and wrote, “One of my most favorite things is a beautiful strip out of an (amazing) and unconventional costume!” Congrats to the many performers who are finding ways to take their nerdy referential acts beyond the niche shows to more general audiences. While specialized shows are important, it’s also important that these performances be viewed as legitimate works of burlesque by significant voices in our own community.

Also, a quick shout out to the geek burlesque strippers who were mentioned in Game Trippers for Wired.com’s article on International TableTop Day!

Nerdlesque has hit Nanaimo, a Canadian city 110 km northwest of Victoria on Vancouver Island. This Saturday is Nanaimo’s first ever nerdlesque show…proof positive that the trend of nerdlesque is growing at a rate that I can barely keep tabs on. When I first started my research, I could list these types of shows easily. I frankly can’t keep up anymore. I feel it speaks to a growing culture trend, seeping into smaller and smaller communities, of celebrating nerdiness and fandom instead of mocking it. Performer Goldie Luxe mentioned that this show was in part inspired by the nerdlesque panel I proposed and moderated for BurlyCon 2012.  Mission accomplished.

For those of you not residing in Nanaimo, her are a few other shows this weekend:

Plan 9 Burlesque and the Mental Notion Society bring a parody of Fight Club to the stage in Chicago.

Epic Win Burlesque out of New York continues to be the flagship troupe for the best of nerdy burlesque by cultivating the “best and the brightest” new performers with The New Nerd Review on Saturday.

And, it’s not a burlesque show but a fun networking opportunity for Seattle nerds of all stripes: Cocktail Connections from GeekGirlCon on Thursday April 11th.

GeekGirlCon is hosting our very first Cocktail Connections! Come out to connect and engage with other geeky professionals, and enjoy Lunchbox Laboratory’s infamous cocktails as well. Professionals of all flavors and persuasions are welcome, whether you are a gamer, a scientist, a writer, a pop culture fanatic, or any other kind of geek. stiletto
