The highlight of my week was the Kings show in Seattle produced the Paula the Swedish Housewife. It featured the best male burlesque performers in the world on one stage for the first time. Burlesque is seeping more and more into my daily life, as every single person at my day job must have heard the fabulous interview of Waxie Moon on NPR that morning and asked “was that the man that performed at our Christmas party?” I wanted to say “No, that was another tall, handsome bald man with a glittery handlebar mustache.” It’s absolutely rewarding to know that the general public’s perception of burlesque is changing due to the good work of performers like Waxie and producers like Paula.
I was particularly excited by the Ray Gunn’s act as Morpheus from the Matrix. So nerdy. So sexy.
Today is International TapleTop Day! If I wasn’t on my way up to Vancouver, BC I would be destroying my sparkle friends over a game of Settler’s of Catan at an event organized by Unnatural Redhead Productions, Smooches and Science Presents, and GeekGirlCon!
Burlesque Board Games on International TableTop Day!
Are you a burlesque performer, producer or fan? Do you like board games? Do you want to get all sparkly and play board games with other burlesque performers, producers and fans?
Anja Keister of D20 Burlesque in New York is organizing a similar event. She writes: If you are in the Brooklyn/Prospect Heights/Park Slope/Atlantic Terminal area tomorrow afternoon, I’m running a TableTop Day event where you can join an RPG one shot game or join a Cards Against Humanity or other board game from 4-8 at the Way Station!
I’ve a good reason for missing out on all the fun. I’m heading up to interview VanDolls Burlesque about their experiences with creating video game inspired acts for Video Game Burlesque Reloaded.
And, finally, the Great Burlesque Exposition in Boston will feature a panel about Geeklesque moderated by good friend and super brainy Lydia Ransom who writes Feminist Sonar. I sent a few questions I’m curious about, considering all the hoopla about nerdy burlesque in our community. I can’t wait to hear about what the panelists have discussed.
