The Burl-X-Files: The Truth Is Down There is shaping up to be the Northwest’s largest X-Files fandom event of 2016. If you love the X-Files, if you are over 21, if you want to meet other fans like you, here are some reasons to believe. Tickets available now and going fast. • There will be 14 unique, spooky, and sexy burlesque acts inspired by the X-Files. • Mulder and Scully will do things to each other they never did on screen. However, there are unsubstantiated reports that Gillian and David have done some of these things to each other. • X-Files author Erica Fraga will be in attendance Jan 16th … Continue reading
Clark Gregg, aka the actor who portrays Agent Coulson (Avengers, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), spoke to a full house at the screening of his new movie, Trust Me, at the Seattle International Film Festival. Mister Gregg told a few stories about working on his delightful new film and during one of these amusing anecdotes he mentioned a film of co-star Sam Rockwell. Upon merely uttering Galaxy Quest, the audience spontaneously squealed and applauded. It was a minor reference in his tale but he stopped. His eyes twinkled (gah, those twinkly hot-dad-hot eyes) and he backed his story up. He said Galaxy Quest again and the audience applauded again. And he proclaimed, … Continue reading
Just a sneak preview of the images shot by Heather Schofner. I want to say my favorite Tori Amos song is something like God or Past the Mission or Blood Roses. But, really, it seems the song that has stuck with me is Flying Dutchman. It reeks of youth but also hope. It’s so heavy handed it’s almost silly. But, ah, that feeling of wanting to make something of yourself. To prove everyone wrong. And, you know what? I did just that. I’m pretty okay with adult Jo Jo. “Hey kid, I’ve got a ride for you. They say, your brain is a comic book tattoo And you’ll never be … Continue reading
Mal and his crew have Serenity. Angel Investigations has the Hyperion Hotel. The Scoobies have the library. The Agents of SHIELD have their plane aka the bus. Whedonesque Burlesque, well, we have the Theatre Off Jackson. It’s our home. It keeps us flying. And it’s worthy of your support. Check out what I have to say about TOJ and follow Theatre Off Jackson on twitter and facebook. Share!
In anticipation of seeing Behind the Blue Door Returns to Celebrate 50 Years of Dr. Who I wanted to reflect on what burlesque has taught me about this British sitcom I’ve never seen. I’m not sure if it’s a sitcom or rom-com or a drama. Is it a soap opera? Only soap operas can be on television as long as Doctor Who. I am fairly certain my knowledge of this programme is slightly skewed by its representation on the burlesque stage. • A Tardis is sexy. A Dalek is sexy. One of them is good and one of them is evil. • There are a bunch of Doctors and some … Continue reading
A round up of some fun upcoming nerdy themed shows! Here are a few events in Seattle and beyond over the next two weekends that seem to be talking nerdy to me. Worlds’ End Burlesque Revue An Evening Inspired by the Works of Neil Gaiman “The tales involve a goddess, Beldam and her doll, the heart of a blue box, a young woman who is far older than she appears, an enslaved faerie, the very essence of dreams personified, and more” June 21st to 22nd and 28th to 29th at the Re-Bar Seattle, Washington Fun Fact, back in 2011 I sent a secret list of local burlesque performers to a … Continue reading
We interrupt this regularly scheduled nerdlesque post to celebrate the fantastic achievement of Jinkx Monsoon and her win on RuPaul’s Drag Race. CONDRAGULATIONS! Watch this video to understand how this is just the beginning of what Jinkx has to show us. Is this what fierce pride and intense jealousy feels like? It’s the pride of knowing she deserves it and will represent her Northwest family of drag queens, burlesque starlets and theater geeks well. It’s also the strange sadness and jealously of knowing we now have to share her the rest of the world. The second part I’ll get over. It’s Monsoon Season, bitches! These are the reasons why I’m … Continue reading
As I dive deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole of nerdy burlesque, I’ve often wondered: has this trend altered how the burlesque schools approach educating new students? As the number of nerdy shows increase, I assume also an increase in number of students whose only experience with burlesque is, well, nerdlesque. This weekend I get to witness a sweet little case study at Miss Indigo Blue’s Academy of Burlesque 101 Recital. On Saturday night fourteen brand new burlesque babies will take the stage and at least one baby, bless her sparkly nerdy heart, will not be shying away from using super specific fandom as her source material. Spoiler: her … Continue reading
This weekend was a big win for Seattle burlesque and nerdlesque. Let me explain…Mr. Wil Wheaton attended a comic book themed show at Emerald City Comicon and seemingly loved every second. If you don’t know who Wil Wheaton is, that’s okay. But, for some of us, it’s kinda of like telling non-burlesque folks “You don’t know who Dita Von Teese is?” But I digress. Nerdlesque is not a dirty word. Keep doing the good work, nerds, and keep putting your best foot forward. I told Wil two years ago that this joke of “Wheatonesque” could maybe happen. And someone took that little joke a wee bit too far, thank goodness. … Continue reading
